Signs That Your Heat Pump Needs to Be Replaced

Here in Durham, NC heat pump technology makes a lot of sense. The system serves as both a heater and an air conditioner, often combined with a smaller furnace to help handle the very coldest days. Heat pumps are very efficient since they facilitate a heat exchange with the refrigerant in their system, rather than flat-out creating the heat themselves. If properly maintained, they can last for many years, but sooner or later every appliance breaks down and your heat pump is no exception.

Here are some signs that you need a heat pump replacement:

  • Inefficient heating
Heat pumps struggle when the temperature drops below 40 degrees, which is why they are often included as part of a hybrid heating system. If you have a hybrid system and you find that the furnace is carrying much more of the load than it should, or if your stand-alone heat pump isn’t making for comfortable air during the heating cycle, it may be time to look for a replacement.
  • Higher energy bills
Going hand in hand with that is a preponderance of higher monthly energy bills, which can get out of hand in heat pumps that are ready to be replaced. If you find your bills rising higher than you anticipated, despite the fact that you’re not using the heat pump more often than normal, it’s probably time to get the unit replaced.
  • Multiple repairs
Repair sessions can be a tricky thing, and if you don’t have to make a lot of major repairs, they’re usually the smart choice. If you find yourself making multiple repairs in a short amount of time and/or you’re looking at a repair that seems like more than it’s worth, retiring the existing unit may be the best option.

These signs that your heat pump needs to be replaced can be exacerbated if your unit is more than ten years old.
