What to Do If You Don’t Have Heat

Needless to say, realizing that you don’t have any heat during one of the coldest days or nights of the year is seriously alarming. While you may be tempted to go straight into panic mode, the best thing to do in such an event is to take a deep breath, remain calm, and get to the bottom of the problem. Here are a few tips about what to do when you lose heating in Holly Springs, NC.

Rule Out Obvious Causes

Before running to the phone to schedule emergency heating repairs, we advise that you double check your thermostat. It’s possible that it is not set correctly, that the programming is off, or that you simply bumped up against it and changed settings accidentally. If you use a programmable thermostat, make sure that you check the settings for the day or night in question. Use a heat pump? Make sure that the thermostat is set to heating. Is the thermostat in a “fan only” mode? If you have cool air blowing out of your vents, this could be the case. If there is no obvious cause of the problem at the thermostat, consider your fuel.

If you use oil or propane to fuel your heating system, that means that you store fuel on site. It also means that it is possible to run out of fuel. Modern times mean that automatic fuel scheduling and delivery is usually in place. If you do schedule your deliveries yourself, though, one may have slipped your mind. In particularly cold winters, it is also possible that you used up all of your fuel. Whatever the case, be sure to check that there is actually fuel in storage. If you use natural gas, you can check with the utility to see if there is a problem on your end. If you have other gas-burning appliances in your home, and they are operating normally, then there probably is an issue with your heater itself.
